How this is calculated
Balance = (Opening balance + deposit) × (1 + r)
- Applied once a year for each year
- r = PPF interest rate
Assumptions and limits
- The deposit is made by 5 April each year, so it earns interest for the full year. Interest is worked out monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and the month's end, and credited on 31 March.
- One rate applies throughout. The government resets the rate every quarter; 7.1% applies for October–December 2026.
- Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. Deposits qualify for the 80C deduction only under the old regime.
- Extensions are with contributions, in blocks of 5 years after the 15-year term.
Rate for 1 October – 31 December 2026, kept unchanged by the Ministry of Finance on 30 September 2026.
