CAGR calculator

CAGR is the steady yearly rate that would turn a starting value into an ending value. It makes returns over different periods comparable.

Decimals are fine, e.g. 2.5 years

Reading the result

Growing at 14.87% every year for 5 years gives the same end value. Actual year-to-year returns may have been very different.

How this is calculated

CAGR = (End ÷ Start)^(1 ÷ years) − 1

  • Absolute return = (End ÷ Start) − 1

Assumptions and limits

  • No money was added or taken out in between. For investments with regular deposits or withdrawals, CAGR overstates or understates the return; use XIRR instead.
  • Dividends or interest paid out are not included unless you add them to the ending value.
