How this is calculated

FV = P × [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)

  • P = monthly investment
  • i = expected yearly return ÷ 12
  • n = number of monthly instalments

Assumptions and limits

  • Each instalment is invested at the start of the month and compounds monthly.
  • With a step-up, the monthly amount rises once a year, after every 12 instalments.
  • The expected return is your assumption and stays the same every year. Real returns vary, and equity returns can be negative for years at a time.
  • Use a return after the fund's expense ratio. Taxes and exit loads are not deducted.
  • This is an illustration, not a forecast or a recommendation of any fund.
